Financial Advisor and CPA for Veterinarians
A flat-fee CPA and Financial Planner team that gives you personalized, holistic advice across your taxes and financial plan. We plan your production pay, school loans, relief income and practice sale, and file your returns.

What we handle for veterinarians
Vet school debt is large next to what the profession pays, so every pay, loan and practice decision runs through the same budget.
- 01
Production pay
Many associates are paid the greater of a base salary or a percentage of production, and some contracts carry a negative accrual that a slow quarter has to earn back. True-ups often arrive as bonuses withheld at a flat 22%, which can leave tax due in April.
- 02
Relief work on a 1099
Relief shifts are self-employment income on Schedule C, with no withholding. You owe 15.3% on 92.35% of the profit, with Social Security stopping at the 2026 wage base of $184,500 after any W-2 wages. Your CPA sets quarterly estimates for it.
- 03
Retirement saving on relief income
A Solo 401(k) can shelter relief profit, but your $24,500 employee deferral for 2026 is one limit across every plan, including an employer’s 401(k). The employer share comes from your relief profit, and the Solo 401(k) has its own $72,000 total.
- 04
Vet school loans on RAP
The Repayment Assistance Plan charges up to 10% of AGI, less $50 a month per dependent, with a $10 minimum; unpaid interest is waived and the rest is forgiven after 360 payments. That forgiveness is federally taxable for discharges after 2025.
- 05
Asset or stock sale
Consolidators usually prefer to buy assets, for new depreciation and goodwill amortized over 15 years; owners usually prefer stock. In an asset sale, equipment gain up to past depreciation is ordinary income and goodwill is capital gain. We compare offers after tax.
- 06
Earn-outs and your contract
An earn-out paid on the practice’s results is part of the price and can be reported as it arrives. One tied to you staying on as a vet can be taxed as pay instead. Read the earn-out and the employment agreement together.
How Nino helps veterinarians
Consolidator offers, loan plans and relief work each come with their own advice, usually from someone selling one of them. On an Advisor plan your financial planner and CPA put them in one plan and file the returns that report them.
Book a free consultation-
A plan in your first two weeks
Your financial planner and CPA build a plan from your returns, your pay contract, your loan servicer’s figures and your goals, then revisit it every quarter and whenever an offer arrives.
-
Returns that match the plan
Your CPA prepares your federal and state returns, with Schedule C for relief work, and sets your quarterly estimates. The AGI on that return drives your RAP payment, so the two are planned together. Nothing is filed until you approve it.
-
Loans and accounts in one view
Nino’s AI software connects your accounts read-only, so you can ask what a relief shift adds after tax or how a lower loan payment changes your savings this year.
What should veterinarians decide early?
Four choices that decide how much of your pay, and of a practice sale, you keep.
Whether to file separately
On RAP, married filing separately leaves your spouse’s income out of the payment. It can also cost more tax than it saves on the loan, so your CPA runs the household both ways each year before you choose.
Whether to work toward PSLF
Public Service Loan Forgiveness cancels the balance tax-free after 120 qualifying payments on Direct Loans while you work full time, as a direct employee, for a government or 501(c)(3) employer: a university hospital, a shelter, a public agency. Private practice does not count.
Consolidator or private buyer
A consolidator usually pays part of the price in cash, part in rollover equity and part in an earn-out. An associate buying you out often needs you to finance part of the price. Compare what each leaves after tax and how long each keeps you working.
How much equity to roll over
Rollover equity can defer tax on that share if it is structured as a contribution to a partnership or a qualifying corporate exchange; otherwise it is taxed like cash. It also concentrates your wealth in one buyer, so we size it against the rest of your plan.
