Financial Advisor and CPA for Military Families
A flat-fee CPA and Financial Planner team that gives you personalized, holistic advice across your taxes and financial plan. We plan your TSP, state residency and PCS moves, and your transition out of uniform.

What we handle for military families
Pay that is partly tax-free, a home state you may not live in, and a move every few years.
- 01
Your Blended Retirement TSP
Sixty days after you enter service the government adds 1% of base pay to your TSP. From the start of your third year it matches up to 4% more when you put in 5%, through your 26th year. Contribute 5% so no match is left behind.
- 02
Combat zone pay
Enlisted members and warrant officers exclude all combat zone pay from income. Commissioned officers exclude up to the highest enlisted pay plus imminent danger pay for each month served there. Roth TSP contributions from that pay are never taxed.
- 03
Tax-free allowances
BAH, BAS and overseas housing allowances are not income, and neither are PCS allowances such as dislocation and temporary lodging. Your taxable income can sit well below your total pay, which changes how we plan your savings.
- 04
Your state of legal residence
Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, you neither gain nor lose a tax home by moving on military orders, and your military pay is not taxed by the state where you are stationed. Your state of legal residence taxes it, under its own rules.
- 05
Your spouse’s state taxes
A spouse who moves to be with you on orders keeps their residence, and a married couple can elect your residence, the spouse’s, or your permanent duty station. A spouse’s wages are not taxed by a duty station state they live in only to be with you.
- 06
PCS moving costs
Active-duty members moving on PCS orders can still deduct unreimbursed moving and travel costs on Form 3903; the 2025 tax law ended the deduction for nearly everyone else. Reimbursements above your actual costs are taxable wages.
How Nino helps military families
Deployments, PCS orders and a spouse’s career rarely line up with tax season. On an Advisor plan your financial planner and CPA plan your pay, your TSP and your family’s state filings together, and revisit the plan every quarter.

A plan in your first two weeks
Your financial planner and CPA build a plan from your leave and earnings statement, your TSP statement, your orders and your family’s goals, then revisit it every quarter and after each move.
-
Returns filed around your orders
Your CPA prepares your federal and state returns, applying the combat zone exclusion, your state of legal residence and your spouse’s election. Nothing is filed until you approve it.
-
Your accounts from anywhere
Nino’s AI software connects your TSP, bank and investment accounts read-only, so your household plan stays current through a deployment or a move.
Which choices matter most in a military career?
Four decisions that set what your service leaves you with.
Roth TSP while your bracket is low
With BAH and BAS untaxed, many servicemembers pay tax at low rates, and combat zone pay may not be taxed at all. Roth contributions made now come out tax-free in retirement, when a military pension and your savings may put you in a higher bracket.
Whether to stay to 20
The Blended Retirement System pension pays 2% of your high-3 basic pay for each year served, starting at 20 years. Between 7 and 12 years you can take continuation pay for agreeing to 3 more. We model staying against leaving with your TSP.
Which state to call home
Your state of legal residence decides who taxes your military pay. It is the permanent home you intend to keep, so a state with no income tax holds only if it truly is yours, and states can check. Compare state income taxes.
How to plan the transition out
VA disability compensation is not taxable, while military retired pay is. A VA rating increase or combat-related special compensation granted for past years can mean a refund on an amended return. We plan your first civilian year around both.
