Financial Advisor and CPA for Federal Employees
A flat-fee CPA and Financial Planner team that gives you personalized, holistic advice across your taxes and financial plan. We plan your FERS retirement date, TSP, survivor election and FEHB, and file your returns.

What we handle for federal employees
FERS pays you from three sources: the pension, the TSP and Social Security. We plan them as one retirement income.
- 01
Your FERS pension
The basic annuity is 1% of your high-3 average salary for each year of service, or 1.1% if you retire at 62 or later with at least 20 years. A $100,000 high-3 and 30 years pays $30,000 a year, or $33,000 at 1.1%.
- 02
Your retirement date
Your minimum retirement age runs from 55 to 57 by birth year, and is 57 if you were born in 1970 or later. Retire at it with 30 years, at 60 with 20, or at 62 with 5, and the annuity is unreduced.
- 03
The FERS supplement
Retire before 62 on an annuity not reduced for age and a supplement stands in for Social Security until 62. Earnings from work above Social Security’s exempt amount cut it $1 for every $2.
- 04
TSP contributions
The 2026 limit is $24,500 across traditional and Roth, plus $8,000 from age 50, or $11,250 in the years you turn 60 to 63. If your 2025 wages topped $150,000, catch-ups must go in as Roth.
- 05
The full 5% match
Your agency adds 1% of basic pay automatically, then matches your first 3% dollar for dollar and the next 2% at 50 cents. Contribute 5% every pay period: reach the limit early and the match stops for the rest of the year.
- 06
FEHB into retirement
To keep FEHB as a retiree, you must retire on an immediate annuity and have been enrolled, or covered as a family member, for the 5 years immediately before it starts. We check that window before you pick a date.
How Nino helps federal employees
Most federal retirement choices are elections you make once: a retirement date, a survivor annuity, a TSP mix. On an Advisor plan your financial planner models those choices and your CPA plans the tax on the income they produce.
Book a free consultation-
A plan in your first two weeks
Your financial planner and CPA build a plan from your leave and earnings statement, your TSP statement, your service history and your household goals, then revisit it every quarter.
-
Returns that match the plan
Your CPA prepares and files your federal and state returns, so a Roth choice, a TSP withdrawal or your first pension year lands the way it was planned. Nothing is filed until you approve it.
-
Your savings in one view
Nino’s AI software connects your outside accounts read-only, so you can test a different retirement date against your savings and spending and see how much room is left.
Which federal elections are hard to undo?
Four choices that set your retirement income, most of them made once.
Roth or traditional TSP
Traditional lowers tax now; qualified Roth withdrawals are tax-free later. A FERS pension and Social Security are taxable income that arrive before any TSP withdrawal, which often keeps federal retirees in a higher bracket than they expect.
Which survivor benefit to elect
A full survivor annuity pays your spouse 50% of your annuity and reduces yours by 10%; a partial one pays 25% for 5%. Either choice short of full needs your spouse’s consent, and a surviving spouse keeps FEHB only with a survivor annuity.
Whether to buy back military time
Active duty after 1956 counts toward your FERS annuity only if you pay a deposit, 3% of military basic pay for service since 2001 plus any interest, before you leave federal service. We compare the deposit with the pension it adds.
Where you live in retirement
Your FERS pension is federally taxable, apart from the share that returns your own contributions. States differ: Nevada and South Dakota have no income tax, and others exempt some or all of a pension. Compare state income taxes.
