Financial Advisor and CPA for People Moving States
A flat-fee CPA and Financial Planner team that gives you personalized, holistic advice across your taxes and financial plan. We plan your move date, equity vests and home sale, and file both state returns.

What we handle when you move states
The year you move, two states each tax a piece of your income. Most of the planning is deciding which piece.
- 01
Two part-year returns
In the year you move you are a part-year resident of both states. Each taxes what you earn while you live there, plus income sourced to it after you leave. California uses Form 540NR and New York Form IT-203. Your CPA prepares both so the same income isn’t taxed twice.
- 02
Domicile, not just days
Your domicile is the one home you intend to return to, and it stays put until you show you have moved. New York and Massachusetts also tax as a resident anyone who keeps a home there and spends more than 183 days in the state, counting any part of a day.
- 03
A state with no income tax
Nine states don’t tax wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Washington still taxes long-term capital gains at 7% above an annual deduction. Compare take-home pay with the state income tax calculators.
- 04
Equity that vests after the move
RSUs are wages when they vest, and California allocates a vest by the days you worked there between grant and vest. A grant from your California years that vests after you reach Texas is still partly California income, so keep a record of where you worked each day.
- 05
Remote work for a New York office
If your assigned office is in New York and you work from home in another state for your own convenience, New York counts those days as New York workdays unless your employer has set up a bona fide office where you work. Plan for that tax before assuming the move ends it.
- 06
The audit after you leave
California and New York both review residency changes. New York looks at your home, business ties, time, family and the items near and dear to you, and it keeps you domiciled there until you show clear and convincing evidence of the move.
How Nino helps when you move states
A move changes your taxes from the date you pick, not the date you file. Your CPA and Financial Planner plan the move date, vests and home sale together. Essential covers one state return; Plus covers up to three, for the year you move and a state you still work in.

A plan in your first two weeks
Your CPA and Financial Planner build a tax and financial plan around your move date, income and goals, then revisit it every quarter, including your first year in the new state.
-
Every state return
Your CPA prepares your federal return and each state return, allocates income between the states, and files nothing until you approve it.
-
Accounts in one view
Nino’s AI software connects your bank, brokerage and retirement accounts read-only, so you can ask what the move changes in your take-home pay and your plan.
What should you decide before the move?
Four choices that are cheaper to settle before the moving truck than at tax time.
When to sell the house
The federal exclusion covers up to $250,000 of gain, or $500,000 on a joint return, if you owned and lived in the home two of the last five years. A state taxes gain on property inside it even after you leave, so moving first doesn’t take the old state off the sale.
When to sell stock
Gains on stock generally follow where you live when you sell: New York, for example, taxes nonresidents only on income sourced there, such as wages for work there and real estate. A large sale after a move to a no-tax state can matter more than the move date. See capital gains on company stock.
Which ties to cut
Move your driver’s license, voter registration, primary home and the things you care about. Keeping a home in the old state can make you a statutory resident there again if you spend more than 183 days in it.
What payroll lists as your work location
Update your work location the week you move so withholding starts in the new state. If the old state keeps withholding, you recover it on a nonresident return, but only after you file. Two employers in one year can leave you short, as RSUs at a new job shows.

Multi-State Taxes
Moving doesn't end your old state's claim on the day the truck leaves. Residency tests, remote-work sourcing and equity that vests after you go decide which state taxes what.
