What we handle for Americans abroad

The US taxes its citizens and green card holders on worldwide income wherever they live. The work is keeping your second country’s tax from becoming a second bill.

  1. 01

    The foreign earned income exclusion

For 2026 you can exclude up to $132,900 of foreign earnings if you are a bona fide resident abroad or spend 330 full days abroad in a 12-month period. It doesn’t reduce self-employment tax, and the rest of your income is taxed at the rates it would have had without it.

  2. 02

    The housing exclusion

Employer-paid housing costs above a base amount, 16% of the exclusion or $21,264 for a full 2026 year, can be excluded too, up to a limit that depends on the city. If you are self-employed, the same costs are a deduction instead.

  3. 03

    The foreign tax credit

Where local tax is higher than US tax, crediting it on Form 1116 can cancel the US tax on that income without the exclusion. You can’t take a credit for tax on income you exclude, so your CPA runs both before choosing.

  4. 04

    The FBAR

If your foreign accounts together topped $10,000 at any point in the year, you file an FBAR with FinCEN, separately from your tax return. It is due April 15, with an automatic extension to October 15. Every account counts toward the total, not only the large ones.

  5. 05

    Form 8938

Living abroad, you file Form 8938 with your return once foreign financial assets pass $200,000 at year-end or $300,000 at any time, or $400,000 and $600,000 on a joint return. It overlaps with the FBAR but doesn’t replace it.

  6. 06

    Funds in your local brokerage

Most foreign mutual funds and ETFs are passive foreign investment companies (PFICs). Without an election, a gain is spread across the years you held the fund, taxed at each year’s top rate and charged interest. Your CPA files Form 8621 and plans which funds to keep.

How Nino helps Americans abroad

Living abroad means two tax systems, a filing date that moves, and accounts the IRS asks about every year. On Plus and Premier your CPA files your FBAR, Form 8938 and PFIC forms with your return; on Essential they are an add-on.

  • A plan in your first two weeks

Your CPA and Financial Planner build a tax and financial plan around where you live, where you are paid and what you own in each country, then revisit it every quarter.

  • One return, every form

Your CPA prepares your federal return with the exclusion or the credit, plus the FBAR, Form 8938 and Form 8621 where they apply, and files nothing until you approve it.

  • Accounts in one view

Nino’s AI software connects accounts read-only, so you can see balances in one place and ask what a sale, a bonus or a move does to your plan.

What should you decide each year abroad?

Four choices that change what you owe in two countries.

Exclusion or credit

In a low-tax country the exclusion often saves more; in a high-tax one the credit can. If you revoke the exclusion, claiming it again within five tax years needs IRS approval, so choose for the years ahead, not just this one.

Whether to use the June 15 extension

Living abroad on April 15 gives you until June 15 to file and pay, with a statement attached, but interest runs from April 15. Form 4868 extends the filing date to October 15. See the 2026 deadline calendar.

Retirement saving while abroad

IRA contributions need taxable compensation, and income you exclude doesn’t count. Exclude all your pay and you can’t fund an IRA that year; claiming the credit instead keeps the room. The 2026 limit is $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or older. See Roth IRA limits.

Your state when you leave

Leaving the US doesn’t end state residency on its own. California keeps taxing a domiciled resident who is away for a temporary purpose, though 546 consecutive days abroad under an employment contract generally counts as leaving. Cut state ties before the move, not after.
