Financial Advisor and CPA for Nurses and CRNAs
A flat-fee CPA and Financial Planner team that gives you personalized, holistic advice across your taxes and financial plan. We plan your travel contracts, locum income, loans and hospital retirement plans, and file your returns.

What we handle for nurses and CRNAs
Shift pay, travel contracts, locum work and two retirement plans at one hospital. This is the work we do with you.
- 01
Travel nursing stipends
Housing and meal stipends are tax-free only while you travel away from a tax home you keep, paying for it while you pay for lodging on assignment. Without a tax home you are an itinerant, and the stipends are taxable pay.
- 02
Your tax home
With no regular place of work, the IRS looks at three things: you work in the area of your main home and stay there when you do, you pay duplicate living costs while away, and you have not abandoned it. Meet all three and that home is your tax home.
- 03
CRNA locum income
Locum work paid on a 1099 has no withholding. Your CPA prepares the Schedule C, sets quarterly estimates, and stops the Social Security part of self-employment tax once wages and locum earnings together pass $184,500 for 2026.
- 04
Overtime and shift differentials
From 2025 through 2028 you can deduct up to $12,500 of overtime, or $25,000 joint, but only the premium half of time and a half that federal law requires. Shift differentials, and overtime your contract pays above that, do not count.
- 05
Your 403(b) and 457(b)
A 457(b) has its own $24,500 limit for 2026, separate from the $24,500 for a 403(b), so a hospital that offers both lets you defer $49,000. At a nonprofit hospital, 457(b) money stays the employer’s property and reachable by its creditors.
- 06
Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Working full time, 30 hours a week or more, for a 501(c)(3) or government hospital counts toward PSLF. After 120 qualifying payments on Direct Loans the rest is forgiven, free of federal income tax.
How Nino helps nurses and CRNAs
Rotating shifts leave little time for paperwork, and a travel year can mean returns in several states. On an Advisor plan your CPA and Financial Planner plan your contracts, your loans and your savings together, and revisit the plan every quarter.

A plan in your first two weeks
Your financial planner and CPA build a plan from your last returns, your pay stubs and contracts, your loan statements and your goals, then revisit it every quarter and when a contract changes.
-
Every state return prepared
Travel contracts can mean returns in each state you worked. Your CPA prepares your federal and state returns and any Schedule C, and files nothing until you approve it. Plus includes up to three states; extra states are $150 each.
-
Answers between shifts
Nino’s AI software connects your accounts read-only, so you can ask what a travel contract pays after tax, or how much a 457(b) deferral lowers your loan payment.
Which money decisions matter most in nursing?
Four choices that change what your shifts are worth.
Staff job or travel contracts
A contract with large stipends beats a staff job only if you keep a tax home. Without one, the stipends are taxed as wages. An assignment in one place expected to last more than a year makes that location your tax home.
How to repay your student loans
Income-driven payments are set from your adjusted gross income, so pre-tax 403(b) and 457(b) deferrals lower both your tax and your payment, and on the path to PSLF a lower payment means more forgiven. Agency contracts generally do not count toward PSLF.
W-2 or 1099 as a CRNA
Your 403(b) deferrals share one $24,500 limit with a Solo 401(k), but the employer contribution from locum earnings is separate, and so is a 457(b). See Solo 401(k) vs SEP IRA.
When to stop working
Leave your employer in or after the year you turn 55 and that plan’s withdrawals avoid the 10% early tax; a governmental 457(b) never owed it. Medicare starts at 65, so retiring sooner means planning health coverage for the years between.
