What we handle for new parents
A baby changes your taxes, your benefits and your budget in the same year.
- 01
The child tax credit
The 2026 credit is $2,200 per child under 17, with up to $1,700 refundable. It phases out above $200,000 of modified AGI, or $400,000 joint, and needs a Social Security number for the child and at least one parent.
- 02
A dependent care FSA
From 2026 you can set aside up to $7,500 per household before tax for care that lets you work, or $3,750 each if married filing separately. Most employers open it at enrollment; ask whether a birth lets you join mid-year.
- 03
The child care credit
The credit counts up to $3,000 of care costs for one child or $6,000 for two or more. From 2026 the rate starts at 50% and steps down to 20% at higher incomes, and FSA money reduces the costs that count.
- 04
Adding your baby to health insurance
Your employer plan must give you at least 30 days after the birth to enroll the baby, with coverage back to the birth date. If you both have coverage, we compare adding the baby to each plan.
- 05
Your withholding
Step 3 of the 2026 Form W-4 counts $2,200 for each child under 17 if your income is $200,000 or less, or $400,000 joint. Update it after the birth so the credit shows up in your paychecks, not only in your refund.
- 06
Your budget through leave
We rebuild your budget around the months of reduced pay on leave and the cost of care afterward, and resize your emergency fund for a household of three.
How Nino helps new parents
A first child touches your tax return, your benefits elections and your estate plan in the same year. On Plus one CPA and Financial Planner team plans all three and files your joint return.

-
Returns with every credit
Your CPA prepares and files your federal and state returns with the child tax credit, the care credit and your FSA reported together, and files nothing until you approve it.
-
One view of the new costs
Nino’s AI software connects your accounts read-only, so you can see what care, insurance and savings cost each month against what comes in.
Which choices matter most in a child’s first year?
Four decisions most parents make once and rarely revisit.
The FSA or the care credit
FSA money reduces the expenses the credit can use, so a full $7,500 FSA leaves no room for the credit even with two children. At higher incomes, where the credit is 20%, the FSA usually saves more because it also skips payroll tax.
A 529, a Trump account, or both
A 529 grows tax-free for education, including up to $20,000 a year of K-12 tuition from 2026. A Trump account is an IRA for your child, open to contributions from July 4, 2026. Compare them in Trump account vs 529.
How much life insurance
Term life sized to replace your income for the years your child depends on it is the usual starting point. We size it from your savings, the other parent’s income and your debts, not a rule of thumb.
A will and a guardian
Without a will, state law decides who inherits and a court picks a guardian with no nomination from you. Your planner sets out what the will must cover; an estate attorney drafts it. See dying without a will.
